After spending decades comforting families at the bedside as a critical care nurse in the Pediatric ICU and NICU, Sandy Drewyor wasn’t ready to slow down after retirement. Instead, she chose to bring her compassionate heart and caregiver’s hands to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northwest Ohio.

“It’s been nearly two years since I started volunteering here,” Sandy shares. “I love it. It makes me feel needed, and it gives me purpose.”
Sandy’s nursing career at Nationwide Children’s Hospital gave her a deep understanding of what families go through during medical crises. She referred many to the Ronald McDonald House over the years. Now, she’s one of the many volunteers behind the scenes, helping everything run smoothly—from answering phones and prepping meals to baking treats and offering a listening ear.

“The biggest thing families need is someone to just listen. A simple conversation can go a long way when they’re exhausted and overwhelmed,” she says. “You can’t be strong for your child if you haven’t eaten, slept, or showered. This House gives them that stability.”
Sandy volunteers alongside her husband Dave, a former educator who tutors and coaches youth. Together, they’ve made service part of their retirement routine—and their lives.

For Sandy, giving back is generational. “I have a granddaughter who wants to volunteer too. I tell everyone: Just try it. You have nothing to lose. It’s a win-win.”
In one word, how does she describe her experience at RMHC Northwest Ohio?
“Fulfilling.”
Sandy reminds us that giving even a small piece of yourself—your time, your talent, your kindness—can make a lasting difference.
