For most children, birthdays are about receiving presents. But for Olivia Edgell, her birthday is about giving back. On Saturday, April 5, Olivia will celebrate turning nine by delivering what is expected to be her largest allergy-friendly donation yet to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Northwest Ohio.

This marks Olivia’s fifth year leading an allergy-friendly food drive to support families staying at RMHC. What began as a small initiative has grown into an inspiring community-wide effort, with hundreds—if not thousands—of donated food items arriving from supporters across the country. This year, the impact is so great that the Edgell family has rented a U-Haul to transport the donations.
Olivia’s journey began in infancy when she suffered a severe allergic reaction, leaving her parents searching for safe food options. Her mother, Laura Edgell, recalls the fear and uncertainty of navigating life with multiple food allergies. That experience fueled their commitment to helping others.

“I was volunteering at RMHC and noticed how few allergy-friendly options were available for families staying there,” said Laura. “That’s when we decided to do something about it. Now, our goal is to fill that pantry every year.”
Olivia’s dedication has not gone unnoticed. In 2024, she was honored as the Youth in Philanthropy Award winner at the annual Philanthropy Day Awards, recognizing her extraordinary efforts in giving back to families in need.

“It’s incredible to see how Olivia’s generosity has grown,” said Wendy Bejaige, Director of Engagement for RMHC Northwest Ohio. “Her donations ensure that every family, regardless of dietary restrictions, has access to safe, comforting food while they focus on their child’s medical care.”

As Olivia continues her mission, she hopes to inspire others to contribute to RMHC Northwest Ohio’s pantry. Donations of allergy-friendly items can be made year-round. Visit rmhctoledo.org to learn more about how to support families in need.
