Amber and Brandon Evans never imagined they’d need the Ronald McDonald House. But when Amber developed preeclampsia at just 24 weeks pregnant and was life-flighted to the hospital, their lives changed in an instant. After 19 days in the hospital, their son, Archer, arrived prematurely, weighing only 1 pound and 9 ounces and measuring 13.2 inches long. As he fought for his life, the Evans family faced the challenge of staying close to him while being far from their home in Norwalk, nearly two hours away.
“The proximity to the hospital was a blessing,” Amber recalls. Without RMHC, they would have endured months of hotel costs and the stress of being separated from their newborn. “It was the biggest gift we could have received. Even though it’s not your normal home, it’s a place you can call home,” Amber says.
During their 111-night stay, the Evans family found not only a place to stay but a community. The House became a source of warmth and comfort, especially during the holidays. Amber recalls a memorable Christmas celebration filled with festive dinners, carolers, and a magical “Nutcracker moment,” all of which brought light to a challenging time. She is especially grateful that RMHC also welcomed Brandon’s family during the holidays. “It was wonderful that we could spend time together and have that support available to us.”
Now, as Archer nears his first birthday, he is thriving—a milestone Amber believes is due to the time they could spend close to him at RMHC. Research shows children recover faster with family nearby during critical times, and the Evans family knows firsthand the power of being together. “Staying at the House relieved all our stress. It was everything we needed and more. It was a godsend, an answered prayer,” she reflects.
