Chandra McFadden’s journey with RMHC Northwest Ohio began with a heartfelt desire to serve others. “When I was in my MBA program, I wrote a vision statement to ‘serve the world over thyself,'” Chandra explains. This passion for helping others led her to volunteer in Chicago, where she lived before moving to Ohio in 2019 and starting her volunteer work at the Ronald McDonald House. “Volunteering makes me the happiest,” she adds.
Every Monday from 3-6 PM, Chandra is a welcoming face at the front desk, greeting cooks and assisting with various seasonal needs. Occasionally, she joins Lisa and Pearl in preparing dinners for families. “Listening to people’s stories and being there for them, especially on their bad days, means a lot to them and to me,” Chandra shares.
A memorable moment for Chandra was during a Christmas event when she met a young mother of twins. “She complimented my sweatshirt, and I gave it to her as a memento of our conversation,” Chandra recalls. This touching interaction, shared with her grandson, is a testament to the deep connections she forms at RMHC.
Volunteering at RMHC brings immense joy to Chandra. “It’s my happy place,” she says. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she deeply missed her time at the House. Chandra also volunteers at Cherry Street Mission, serving meals on Saturdays, further highlighting her dedication to helping others.
“The most important aspect of RMHC’s services is providing a place for families to stay,” Chandra notes. “Taking that burden away from them is truly remarkable.” She feels that her volunteer work allows her to help others, driven by a sense of calling and spirituality.
Chandra balances her volunteering with other responsibilities by making it a priority. “I leave work early to volunteer, and my company understands how important it is to me,” she explains. Her advice to potential volunteers is straightforward: “Don’t think about it. Just do it. Connect with the people and take it all in.”
The RMHC community, especially Family Services Managers Lisa and Pearl, has greatly influenced Chandra’s experience. “Lisa and Pearl mentor me with their motherly instincts. It feels like cooking with my mom when I’m with them,” she says with a smile.
Through her time at RMHC, Chandra has learned valuable lessons in patience and understanding. “Not everyone wants to talk, and you don’t know what others are going through,” she reflects.
Chandra’s love for volunteering and the people she meets keep her coming back. “I love seeing the different people and hearing their stories. You’re constantly learning from others,” she says.
